When the time comes to trade in your car, you might be stressed! But don't worry! We've compiled a list of do's and don'ts when trading in your vehicle to help you get the most money for your trade-in and to help with your peace of mind.
Do's
1. Use online tools to help appraise your car's value.
It's helpful to know or at least have an estimate on what your trade-in will be worth before going to the dealership. Check out our fantastic car trade-in calculator so you'll be one step ahead of the game.
2. Give your Trade-In Curb Appeal
While it's easy to want to bring your car in as is, it's helpful to spruce it up a bit before coming. A little sprucing up can go a long way, so before you come in, clean the exterior and interior space of the car well. You should also have minor dents removed and any cracks or defects in windows fixed.
3. Bring all relevant paperwork with you.
Nothing is more frustrating than being ready to finally trade in your car and drive off the lot with your new car to realize you forgot a piece of paperwork. Here's a list of all the paperwork you should bring with you to the dealership:
- Certificate of title
- Current registration
- All car keys
- Owner's manual
- Maintenance records
- Account number or payment stub (if you have a loan on the car)
Don'ts
1. Don't over-fix your trade-in
As we mentioned above, it's helpful to spruce up your trade-in before bringing it in; however, it's also important not to go too crazy when fixing your trade-in. Be sure to set a budget and perform simple maintenance and cosmetic fixes; however, don't spend so much money that you will lose money in the long run.
2. Remember to pack all your car accessories.
Most dealers like it when the trade-in has all the accessories. Things like the owner's manual, extra car keys, and floor mats can go a long way. It can even lead to you getting more money for your trade-in!
